ACCESS TO DINNER PLAIN

It's an adventure in and of itself to get to Dinner Plain. The Great Alpine Road, which runs 303 kilometres from Wangaratta to Bairnsdale in High Country Victoria and reaches 1,840 metres at Mount Hotham, is Australia's highest road. It's one of Australia's most beautiful highways, with views that can't be found anywhere else. The road will take you through rolling river valleys, virgin bush, small towns, and gourmet food districts, culminating in dizzying views of Mount Buffalo and Mount Feathertop as you spiral your way up Hotham. Dinner Plain, unlike the other main ski resorts, does not charge a resort access fee.

Antifreeze & Snow Chains For Mt Hotham & Dinner Plain

With the snow comes colder temperatures, so you'll need to be extra cautious. If your vehicle runs on diesel, we recommend putting antifreeze and alpine diesel in the tank to keep it running smoothly. You must also drive cautiously because the road may become snowy or ice.

Snow chains must be carried at all times during the snow season and fixed at designated chain fitting bays for your safety. It is mandatory to have chains in your automobile before mounting the mountain from Omeo or Harrietville. Hoys in Harrietville (free installation and removal mobile service on the Harrietville side) and Hoys new Omeo ski shop, Rays Ski Hire in Myrtleford and Billys Ski Hire and Service Station in Omeo, as well as other ski and snowboard outlets, rent chains near the base of the mountain. Here are a few things to keep in mind with chains.

Please note that not all vehicles can accommodate chains, so please check with a supplier before leaving home to ensure that your vehicle can.

Before you head up to the snow, practise fitting the chains on your car to ensure you're comfortable doing it.
Make sure the chains are on the driving wheels. If it's front wheel drive, the front wheels, and if it's rear wheel drive, the back wheels.
To put on and remove chains, use the chain fitting bays.
You may face a fine if you do not carry chains or do not put them on as directed.
Chains are tough to instal on snow-covered vehicles. If you didn't need them on the way up, you might want to put them in your vehicle park when you get there to save time if you need them on the way back. If not, simply take them off before leaving.

When your car is equipped with chains, do not exceed 40 kilometres per hour.

ALPINE DIESEL AND PETROL STATIONS

Because there are no petrol outlets in Mount Hotham or Dinner Plain, you must fill up your car before beginning your journey up the mountain. Bright and Omeo are the last gas stations before you reach the top. If you drive a diesel vehicle, it is critical that you use alpine grade diesel. There are additives in it that prevent the diesel from freezing. Although most petrol stations in the alpine area should have alpine diesel, it's always a good idea to double-check before filling up your tank.

RESORT REGISTRATION
Outside the Mount Hotham Resort boundary is Dinner Plain. Unless they wish to visit Mount Hotham and park their car within the resort boundaries, visitors to Dinner Plain do not need to purchase resort entry. Visitors to Hotham will be able to pre-purchase resort admittance via the internet or their smartphones. Without internet or smartphone connection, visitors to Hotham Alpine Resort can purchase ticket-less resort entry over the phone, from off-mountain suppliers such as Hoys in Harrietville and Billies in Omeo, or at the Resort Management Board Office in Hotham.
